- Shamua was the father of Eliezer, a first century scholar who was martyred by the Romans (Ethics of the Fathers 1:15).
Then he [proselyte] went before Shammai and said to him. Am I then eligible to be a High Priest; is it not written in the Torah, and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death? He went before Hillel and said to him, O gentle Hillel; blessings rest on thy head for bringing me under the wings of the Shechina! Some time later the three met in one place; said they, the impatience of Shammai sought to drive us from the world, but the gentleness of Hillel brought us under the wings of the Shechina [from these stories it would appear that proselytes were eagerly accepted by Hillel] (Shabbat

Cannot one man alone ordain? Did not Rab Judah say in the name of Rab: May this man indeed be remembered for blessing - his name is R. Judah b. Baba ; were it not for him, the laws of kenas would have been forgotten in Israel. Forgotten? Then they could have been learned. But these laws might have been abolished; because once the wicked Government [that of Hadrian, in the second century[ [as an act of religious persecution], decreed that whoever performed an ordination should be put to death, and whoever received ordination should he put to death, the city in which the ordination took place demolished, and the boundaries wherein it had been performed, uprooted. What did R. Judah b. Baba do? He went and sat between two great mountains, [that lay] between two large cities; between the Sabbath boundaries of the cities of Usha and Shefaram [two Galilean cities prominent in the second century as places of refuge for the Sanhedrin. It was said that the enemy did not stir from the spot until they had driven three hundred iron spear-heads into his body, making it like a sieve [hence it is evident that even one person was authorized to bestow the degree of Rabbi]. , the MEM hummmmmms! Mem is usually associated with the word mayim - WATER or Eemah - MOTHER. Mem is composed of a Caf (20) and a Vav (6) = 26, which have the same GEMATRIA as the Yud (10) Hey (5) Vav (6) Hey (5) = 26 name of God - the holiest of God's Names.

The other form is at the end of the word the closed Mem. According to Talmud, the open Mem represents revealed teaching and the closed Mem represents concealed teaching AIR Shabbat 104a.
Of the increase [Lamed Mem sophit Resh Beit Hey] of his government and peace there shall be no end (Isaiah 9:6).
R. Tanhum said: Bar Kappara expounded in Sepphoris, Why is every Mem in the middle of a word open, whilst this [Mem sophit] is closed? - The Holy One, blessed be He, wished to appoint Hezekiah as the Messiah, and Sennacherib as Gog and Magog [Gog and Magog are, in Jewish eschatology, the tribes who shall lead all nations in a tremendous attack upon Israel; their final defeat ushers in the halcyon days of the Messiah (Ezekiel 38). It is not clear whom the prophet had in mind, the whole passage having the mystic form of apocalyptic prediction. When used as a vowel, Vav can sound like a long o or a long u. Translated it means AND. It is the GREAT CONNECTOR. Vav appears in the Four Letter name of God - Yud Hey Vav Hey.
